Buddhists of Zalaszántó
Drupon Konchok Jigmet has been living in Hungary for the past 18 years, serving as tibetan buddhist monk at the Zalaszántó Stupa representing the Drikung Kagyü buddhist church. Jigmet is from Ladakh, North India. At the age of nine he was chosen to follow the buddhist path and was 30 when he was appointed by His Holiness, the leader of the church to move to Hungary to take care of Stupa’s surroundings. Monks are not given the opportunity to choose their destination, they are appointed and sent to certain countries without having any choice. The 30 meter high Stupa is one of the largest Buddhist monuments in Europe and serves as a symbol of peace. The solid building sacred by the Dalai Lama himself and contains a tree of life and Buddha’s relics inside. Jigmet as a monk lives in harmony with his surroundings, follows a vegetarian diet, celibate and dedicates his life to helping others with pure empathy and to reach the state of enlightenment with Tibetian buddhist practices.
